  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Medical Biotechnology (cod. 9081)

Learning outcomes

Describe the pathophysiological bases of human diseases with specific emphasis on oncological, degenerative metabolic and immunological conditions, focusing on cellular and molecular etiopathogenetic mechanisms of clinical relevance; Identify pathological conditions in which biotechnological approaches are already of clinical relevance; Select and interpret information in order to collaborate with medical practitioners in designing and applying biotechnological diagnostic and therapeutic strategies; Plan, implement and develop potential applications of biotechnology in the field of Internal Medicine, in order to operate in biomedical research

Course contents

  • Metabolic diseases (i.e. haemochromatosis and iron metabolism
  • Degenerative diseases (i.e. diffused and localized forms including Alzheimer disease and enteric neuropathies)
  • Neoplastic diseases (i.e. colorectal cancer)
  • Gut microbiota and mucosal immuno-neuropathologies
  • Collagen and auto immune diseases (i.e. atrophic gastritis, LES, rheumatoid arthritis)

Readings/Bibliography

1. copies of slides presented during lectures

2. Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine 19th EditionMc Graw Hill

Teaching methods

1. Frontal lecture

2. hands-on lab activities

Assessment methods

oral exams on both what presented during frontal lectures and experienced during lab activities

Aim of oral exams is to verify the capabilities of each student to apply acquired knowlwdge and follow the relative reasoning

Final grading willl be the average of the gradings obtained in the different compomnents of the integrated course which will separately calculated as follows:

limited knowledge and need of help for deductive reasoning → 18-19;

Sufficient preparation on a limited number of items developed during the course and analyical capabilities limited to practical aspects, correct linguistic skills → 20-24;
Sufficient preparation on a a large number of items developed during the course with relative analyical capabilities, correct linguistic skills. Good linguististic skills → 25-29;
Exaustive preparation on all the items developed during the course and relative analyical capabilities, elegant and thoughtful expression → 30-30L.
