87835 - Cosmetic Formulations Analysis And Quality Control

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Rimini
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Advanced Cosmetic Sciences (cod. 9225)

Learning outcomes

Because of the frequency and after passing the final exam of the course Cosmetic formulations analysis and quality control, the student - has acquired the knowledge on the application of the instrumental methods (HPLC, GC, HPLC-MS, fluorometry, HPLC-DAD, UV-VIS, etc.), for the analysis of the different types of cosmetic formulations belonging to the categories reported in the European legislation; - can perform the selective determination of ingredients, employed under restriction limits, in stability studies and quality control, including the determination of forbidden ingredients by law; - can apply the preliminary sample preparation methods, in relation to the specific cosmetic formulation and choosing and validating the most suitable analytical procedure; - can apply the gained knowledge to real problems as well as to new issues related to the cosmetics formulations analysis.

Course contents

Course contents

Analytical advanced methodologies (HPLC, GC, HPLC-MS, fluorometry, HPLC-DAD, UV-VIS, etc.) and sample preparation for the analysis of cosmetic formulations belonging to the categories reported in the European legislation ((body and hair wash, toothpaste, emulsions hydro and lipo gels) in view of quality control and stability studies. Validation of the methods and determination of validation parameters.

Laboratory practice:

  1. Solubility assay and UV, IR and fluorescence spectra registration, determination of polarimetry constant (quinine, benzoic acid, triclosan, chlorocresol, camphor, menthol)

    Cosmetic products in solution

  2. Determination of Quinine in a liquid hair cosmetic product via L/L extraction and UV spectroscopy
  3. Determination of benzoic acid in a liquid hair cosmetic product via L/L extraction and titration
  4. Direct Determination of Quinine in a liquid hair cosmetic product by fluorescence spectroscopy
  5. Determination of Thioglycolic acid in a hair permanent cosmetic product by UV spectroscopy (redox method with Fe3+ and phenanthroline)
  6. Determination of Thioglycolic acid in a hair permanent cosmetic product by HPLC-UV, via pre-column derivatization with ethacrynic acid

    Cosmetic products in gel

  7. Determination of Triclosan in toothpaste and mouthwash by HPLC-UVDAD
  8. Gas-chromatographic (GC-FID) determination of menthol and camphor in a cosmetic gel

    Cosmetic product in cream

  9. Determination of Chlorocresol in a 0/W cream by HPLC-UVDAD
  10. Determination of Chlorocresol in a O/W cream by Solid Phase Extraction and GC-FID
