Learning outcomes

The course guides students in acquiring the theoretical knowledge and practical skills for designing and conducting of a qualitative research project.

Through lectures, seminars and practical exercises in small groups, student will get acquainted with the main qualitative techniques for data collection and data analysis.

At the end of the course, students will be able to a) formulate specific research questions; b) choose and apply the most suitable data collection methods in relation to the identified research questions; c) choose and apply the most suitable analysis techniques to the collected data; d) understand and critically evaluate the results of a qualitative empirical research.

Course contents

The course combines frontal lectures, seminars and practical exercises.

Lectures deepen epistemological principles guiding qualitative research, discuss the different phases of fieldwork and some of the main techniques for data collection and data analysis.

Seminars consist in the presentation of qualitative empirical research and in their discussion with the students. The aim of these lessons is to familiarise students with the methodologies  presented during lectures through concrete examples.

During practical exercises, students are invited to conduct, individually or in groups, a qualitative research.

Readings/Bibliography

The course does not follow any specific textbook.

Readings (in Italian and English) will be suggested during the course on specific techniques.

International students are kindly requested to get in touch with the professor to define a specific programme.

Teaching methods

The course is divided into lectures, seminars and practical exercises. Students will be encouraged to take active part in lessons through open discussions and presentation. During practical exercises, students will be guided in the conduction of a research project.

Assessment methods

Students will be invited to elaborate a scientific report on the qualitative research they have conducted.
