Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will:

1. know the main psychological theories and methodological aspects involved in Developmental Psychopathology and Clinical Psychology;

2. know the theoretical knowledge about the following key concepts:

-troubles, disturbance or relational disorder in childhood, adolescence and adult age;

-communicative meaning of psychopathological symptom;

-aggression, addiction, self-defeating behaviors;

-education, prevention, flexibility, and interpersonal ralations management;

-theories and techniques of group management;

3. have communication abilities that allow him to cope and manage the psychological problems in patients / users and tools to conduct an interview in the helping relationship;

4. have the theoretical and methodological skills to build a business network with different professionals and other agencies in the area.

Course contents

Aim and contents

The course's aim is to acquire knowledge about the processes of group in the theoretical perspective of clinical psychology.

The outcomes relate to the ability to more easily read the psychological phenomena, to enhance the awareness of one’s own role in the work group and the ability to be proactive and constructive in interpersonal/professional relationships.

These targets will be achieved by:

-knowing the mental and physical wellbeing and psychopathology; the definition of mental distress; the continuum between normality and pathology; the relativism of the historical - cultural context in psychological diagnosis;

-sharing with other professionals a common language of mental distress; recognize psychological distress signals and approach the patient/client the way most appropriate to his kind of mental functioning;

-knowing the psychopathology to build effective educational activities based on personal, psychological and contextual characteristics of the patient/client.

-Definition and classification of Clinical Psychology as an application field of research and intervention.
-The main theoretical paradigms.
-The key concepts for understanding the psychopathology.
-The psychological distress in childhood.
-The adolescent psychological distress.
-The main forms of mental distress in adulthood and old age.
-The interview in the helping relationship.
-Supervising the work.
-Team work.
-Promote wellness and prevent burn-out.

Teaching methods

Besides the lectures, some exercises will be carried out (paper-pencil, role-playing, comments to video movies...) in order to illustrate certain aspects of Clinical Psychology.

Assessment methods

At the end of the lessons, the student have to take an exam (the assessments will be with scale 30).

The exam will be a writing with:

3 open questions (to be answered in a synthetic way but accurate, remaining within the limits of a facade of A4 size paper).

Each question will be based on one of the textbooks listed in the References.

All three answers must be positive (minimum score 6/10) to pass the test.

Total available time: 1 h.
