Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is able to learn the distinctive cultural elements of the media system in English-speaking countries, particularly in Great Britain.

Course contents

The course will examine some central figures of 1960s British pop culture, investigating their impact on the culture and society of the time and the role of the media in the construction of their image. It will look at figures from the world of music (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithfull, The Who, David Bowie), film (Richard Lester, Antonioni, Hammer House, as well as actors and actresses such as Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay, Julie Christie, Rita Tushingam, Michael Caine and Jane Birkin), photography (Bailey, Duffy), visual arts (David Hamilton, Paolozzi, Peter Blake, Jann Haworth, Pauline Boty), football (George Best), fashion (Mary Quant, Biba). In addition to the scandals of the period, from the obscenity trial of the novel Lady Chatterley's Lover to the Profumo scandal.

Oral exam (15-20 minutes).
