37501 - Industrial Policy and Antitrust

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Economics and Economic Policy (cod. 8420)

Learning outcomes

After taking the course, the student is expected to be able to use formal instruments to understand firms' strategic interaction as well as its implications for antitrust/competition policy.

Course contents

The contents of the integrated course are illustrated in the page of the first part, Industrial Organization, which offers the elements of game theory and a range of basic oligopoly models, while this delivers a view of several extensions from mergers to network externalities.

The policy implications of any issue illustrated in the first part of the course will be discussed on the basis of the current legislation in the EU, USA and Japan. The coverage will include mergers, cartel behaviour, product differentiation, entry barriers, innovation and network externalities.

The last lecture will host a compact discussion of the impact of pollution and/or natural resource exploitation on the policy prescriptions concerning antitrust/competition policy and innovation policy.
