Learning outcomes

Students acquire the basic elements (methodology and contents) of gender and intercultural socio-literary studies; they can apply the acquired knowledge in the field of intercultural communication; they are able to evaluate and apply in that field deontologically correct behaviors; and can independently elaborate further knowledge.

Course contents

The core course (taught in the first semester) is an introduction to women's and gender studies. We will look at how these studies have transformed traditional disciplines: from literary criticism to biology, history, law, film studies, economics, sociology, anthropology, translation studies, linguistics, advertising, and men's studies. Seminars will focus on selected, single disciplines (English literature, Popular culture, Film Studies, Anthropology, Translation). Seminars will be coordinated by: R. Baccolini (Literature), Sofia Cavalcanti (Postcolonial literature), Adele D'Arcangelo (translation), Beatrice Spallaccia (Media), Ira Torresi (Film Studies), Elizabeth Whitaker (Anthropology). Each student must sign up for one seminar.

The translation seminar will consider how translation processes can effect the reading of literary texts in a gender perspective. We will consider different literary genre such as poetry, short stories, fiction, children's literature.

Assessment methods

Written exam (on the required readings) (50%).

A written assignment to be handed in one week before the exam (on material from the seminar) (50%).

Grading scale

30-30L: Excellent level. The candidate possesses excellent translation skills, with a very high level of competence in the target language.

27-29: Above average level. The candidate makes only minor errors, and shows a solid command of the required skills and competences.

24–26: Generally sound level. The candidate displays a number of shortcomings, indicating a reasonable command of the required skills and competences.

21-23: Adequate level. The candidate displays significant shortcomings and only an adequate command of the required skills and competences.

18–20: Minim level. The candidate only meets the minimum level required and shows a minimal command of the required skills and competences.

< 18 Fail: The candidate does not meet the required standard and shows a wholly inadequate command of the required skills and competences.
