Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student Is expected to know the most important turning points of history and theory of television, its main formats and genres. Among them, he is able to analyze in all its aspects the contemporary seriality and to consciously evaluate the narrative and formal aspects of television shows. Finally, the student is able to recognize the most important production dynamics of the audiovisual creative industries.

Course contents

The class aims to provide the student with the essential tools to understand the industrial landscape and the cultural horizon of contemporary audiovisual system. It therefore focuses on television, but also on all new forms of distribution and use of products, from on-demand to over-the-top platforms.

The texts are:


1. I generi televisivi, by Giorgio Grignaffini (the most recent edition on the market is recommended), Carocci publisher. The mandatory chapters are: 3-4-5-6-7.


2. Che cos'è una serie televisiva, by Giorgio Grignaffini and Andrea Bernardelli, Carocci publisher. The mandatory chapters are: 1-3-4.


Materials to help the student (not to be studied) will be published during the course on IOL website and always in that context some programs or TV series to be recognized during the exam will be indicated.

Teaching methods

The lessons will be live and / or online according to the current health indications of the Department, with audiovisual examples of  analyzed products.

Assessment methods

The exam will take place through a written multiple choice test.
