Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to acquire knowledge and skills in the field of written fashion, from print to digital age; knows and contextualize the main examples of fashion writings non only in the Italian scene, but also in Europe and America; is able to recognize and critically analyse different textual typologies among literature, non fiction, journalism and advertising language; she/he has the necessary tools for the composition of texts in Italian, with specific reference to the fashion industry.

Course contents

The course aims to illustrate the evolution and characteristics of written fashion from the origins to the digital era though the analysis of paradigmatic writings among dandyism, poets and fashion journalists, fashion novels, futurist fashion posters, female writers and fashion journalists, fashion and youth culture, writings of stylists, up to the phenomenon of fashion blogger. For the purpose, different textual typologies will be examined, including literature, journalism, non-fiction, advertising and social media, to analyze the most representative examples of fashion writings. Particular attention will be dedicated to communication strategies and to the themes of beauty, body, identity, emancipation, wellbeing in women's writings between literature and journalism, from the beginnings of the fashion press to the present day.

Teaching methods

Lectures with practical exercises.

Attendance of lessons is not compulsory, but highly recommended as it is useful for in-depth knowledge of the topics and texts analyzed in class and the processing of personal texts.

Assessment methods

Oral examination.

In the oral exam the Student must demonstrate:

- full and in-depth knowledge of the texts in the program

- ability to analyze fashion texts

- good expressive skills and use of a language appropriate to the subject.

To obtain an excellent evaluation, it is necessary to demonstrate an excellent knowledge of the contents and topics; sure ability to interpret the texts; any personal insight agreed with the teacher before the end of the lessons; appropriate and effective exposure.
