Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously on topics of current affairs and diplomacy. Can use language flexibly and effectively for academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed texts on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Course contents

The course will focus on the elaboration of written texts, specifically, reports and essays.

The course studies the use of Academic English in its written form from an international political-economical perspective. In fact, the student will move away from national UK or US Englishes, geographically limited, and will learn to apply International English which is adopted not only by the UN, but also used at an international level. Discussion topics will focus on the comparison of different contemporary political and economical frameworks world wide, and particular attention will be placed on the analysis and production of the specific registers and structures of written English.

Course duration: 40 hours

Teaching methods

Due to the restrictions imposed by the current health emergency, teaching will be carried out with the on-line modality:

Lessons are conducted in English on MS TEAMS. Various sources will be employed for linguistic analysis (news reports, editorials, interviews, speeches, graphs, tables, and other visual material). Students are expected, and will be called, to participate with active feedback and discussions, and follow up with written work.

Assessment methods

There will be a mid-term exam and final exam where the student will have to write an essay and a report. The final exam will be followed by an oral exam in which the student demonstrates their speaking skills in a presentation on a topic seen during course and further researched.

Students will require a B2 entry level, and according to final mark will exit with a C1 level (25/30 and up).

Once the AlmaEsami list closes, prior to each exam, all students will receive an informative email with detailed information regarding the exam procedure to be followed.

Teaching tools

Didactic material will be made available on the University's online platform VIRTUALE. Students will be required to download available documents and to regularly check for updates.

All students must have MS TEAMS and ZOOM correctly installed with their Unibo credentials.

ATTENTION:

Given the instability of the Covid19 emergency situation, this program, first published in July 2020, is subject to change with regards to methods of teaching, didactic material, and/or exams. Timely communication will be given through an update of this program, as well as through appropriate notices published on the usual institutional channels: notices published on the teacher’s web-page, and on the DSP-SID program website.
