Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student can understand the main ideas of complex written and oral texts in the field of social and political sciences. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity and can express and negotiate viewpoints . Can produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Course contents

Part 1 will focus on the comprehension of written discourse.

Part 2 will focus on the comprehension of verbal communication.

The course studies the use of the English language as a means of communication in an international political-economical setting. Focus will be placed on the micro and macro linguistic elements used, as well as their psychological impact.

Course duration: 30 hours

Given the ongoing emergency situation, detailed information regarding reference material will be communicated during the first lesson so that the needs of off-campus students can be met as those students which have physical access to the University’s libraries.

Teaching methods

Due to the restrictions imposed by the current health emergency, teaching will be carried out with the blended modality:

Lessons: are conducted in English on MS TEAMS. Various sources will be employed for linguistic analysis (news reports, editorials, interviews, speeches). Students are expected, and will be called, to participate with active feedback and discussions.

Laboratory: the course is accompanied by a 40 hour language lab to be held in-class and on line. Writing, listening and speaking skills will be exercised to developed to improve the students linguistic competence.

Assessment methods

The mid-term exam will consist in a written reading comprehension exam.

The final exam will consist in a written listening comprehension exam, followed by an oral exam in which the student demonstrates their speaking skills in discussing a topic extracted from the IOL material.

Once the AlmaEsami list closes, prior to each exam, all students will receive an informative email with detailed information regarding the exam procedure to be followed.

 

Teaching tools

Didactic material will be made available on the University's online platform VIRTUALE. Students will be required to download available documents and to regularly check for updates.

All students must have MS TEAMS and ZOOM correctly installed with their Unibo credentials.
