Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students are supposed to have knowledge of fundamental social changes in terms of values and life models and their impact on cultural production and reception; they develop theoretical skills to facilitate the sociological framing, understanding, and explanation of such phenomena; they can analyze cultural trends and their impact on social processes; they are familiar with the cultural dimension of the social morphogenesis of various societal domains, e.g. the agencies of socialization and the life-worlds of local communities; work, civic and political participation; and cultural participation within various social, economic and political organizations.

The course might lead to professional opportunities in the field of cultural institutions, the cultural and creative industry, mass media and journalism, involved in processes of cultural production and especially of audience development and engagement.

Course contents

The course is articulated in two sections. The first one introduces and defines the field of sociology of culture, the second one deals with the relationships between institutions and agencies within the cultural system, focusing on cultural practice conceived as promotion of capability and production of social capital.

Assessment methods

Learning will be assessed through individual interview based on the exam reference texts, in order to evaluate both the learning of course content by the student and his analysis and argumentation skills.

Students having an excellent critical and in-depth analysis skills, the ability to link the main issues addressed in the course, the use of appropriate language with respect to the specificity of the discipline, will result in an 'excellent' assessment .

Students having a mnemonic knowledge of the contents, of a discrete critical capacity and connection between the course themes, the use of an appropriate language, will result in an 'discrete' assessment .

A 'sufficient' assessment will be given in case of: formative gaps but, however, capacity to achieve a minimal knowledge on topics the course is focused on; the use of inappropriate language.

A 'negative' assessment will be given in case of: the lack of critical thinking skills, orientation difficulties with respect to the issues addressed in the exam textbooks, formative gaps, the use of inappropriate language
