Learning outcomes

The student - knows the strategies, techniques, traditional and state-of-the-art tools and methods used in specialized translation tasks - is able to apply them to the translation of technical and scientific texts from different genres and text types, from Italian into French, meeting specific translation briefs and respecting the communicative functions of the source texts - knows the main techniques required for information mining, drafting, editing and revising texts, including the overall quality evaluation of the translated text

Course contents

This module (40 hours) aims to enhance the students’ proficiency and their translation, technology and organisation skills by means of specialized texts commonly encountered by professional translators.

This module will focus on understanding the source text and the correct translation of the target text (idiomatic translation, suitable for the target audience, terminology, typography rules) in order to obtain a translation that is in line with industry requirements.

The course will also explore review processes and quality control under real-life conditions (meeting deadlines) and the requirements of different types of customer regarding target texts.

CAT tools will be used during the course.

The lessons will focus on the following areas:

- Business procedures (risk management, security)

- Technical and scientific texts (user manuals, robotics, medical devices, etc.)

- Corporate communication documentation (in-house training, product presentations)

Teaching methods

The module is structured around a series of seminars with hands-on activities aimed at analyzing the texts to identify their main characteristics and problems and translating them to a professional standard.

Special care will be taken to enhance documentation strategies and the accuracy and reliability of documentation.

The translation exercises will also be carried out with the aid of CAT tools under real-life conditions.

The students’ translations will be collectively revised to obtain a “final” version.

The module requires compulsory attendance (70% classroom attendance)

Assessment methods

A certain number of texts will be proposed for translation for individual ongoing evaluation. These exercises will not be part of the end of module examination, but will serve to provide materials for subsequent analysis in class. The texts will contain terminology and phraseology already analyzed during the course in order to test the students’ level of understanding.

The module will be assessed by a three-hour end of module examination (around 250/300 words in length). Students will be allowed to use the internet for specific web searches, mono and bilingual dictionaries and specialised glossaries. The content of the text will be in relation to the themes examined throughout the course.

Learning assessment scale

30-30L

Excellent level. The candidate possesses excellent translation/language skills, with a very high level of competence in the target language /(or) in the language and culture being studied.

27-29

Above average level. The candidate makes only minor errors, and shows a solid command of the required skills and competences.

24– 26

Generally sound level. The candidate displays a number of shortcomings, indicating a reasonable command of the required skills and competences.

21-23

Adequate level. The candidate displays significant shortcomings and only an adequate command of the required skills and competences.

18– 20

Minim level. The candidate only meets the minimum level required and shows a minimal command of the required skills and competences.

< 18 Fail

The candidate does not meet the required standard and shows a wholly inadequate command of the required skills and competences.

The final mark will be the average of all the marks obtained in the Specialized Translation module from French into Italian, and in the Specialized Translation module from Italian into French.

Teaching tools

The workshops will take place in computer labs equipped with PCs and projector. There will be substantial hands-on practice in translation, using CAT tools, and revision tasks.

Translation exercises will take place under real-life conditions when possible.
