Learning outcomes

Students achieve a detailed expertise about executive design of wastewater treatment plants and other sanitary engineering works.

At the end of the course students may execute preliminary, definitive and executive design of main sanitary engineering works.


Course contents

A good expertise and understanding of Hydraulic and Chemistry base subjects should be gained. Mandatory requirements are on imposed but it’s important that the student has taken care of one Environmental and Sanitary course. Fluent spoken and written Italian is a necessary pre-requisite: all lectures and tutorials, and all study material will be in Italian.

DESIGN OF WATER SANITATION AND TREATMENT PLANTS

Part 1) General introduction to the following treatment techniques:

Activated sludge provided of denitrification with internal carbon source. Submerged aerated biofiltration. Granular settling. Mass settling. Lamellar settling. Oxy-nitrification by pure oxygen, by micro bubbles and by high efficiency air diffusers. SBR plants. Chemical and UV disinfection. Anaerobic sludge digestion. Composting of sludge and urban waste organic fraction Mitigation of olfactory emissions by biofiltration .

Part 2) Detailed analysis of all text and drawings elaborates of the following projects:

Preliminary project of a large activated sludge urban wastewater treatment plant working in steady state and provided of predenitrification phases. Definitive project of a medium urban wastewater treatment plant based on submerged aerated biofilters. Executive project of a small wastewater treatment plant using bio disk techniques. Price list. Metric-Calculation. Amount calculation. Special tender dossier. Contract. Works direction. Accounting.

Part 3) Detailed analysis of the following preliminary and definitive full scale projects of natural treatment and finishing systems:

Aerobic lagoon system. Facultative lagoon system . FWS phytotreatment with or without recirculation. Onsite SFS phytotreatment systems applied to small communities. Biofilter applied to mitigation emissions from solid waste pre-treatment plants.

Teaching methods

Each subject developed in room lessons is coupled with applications and practical examples.

During exercise hours are analysed and discussed text elaborates and drawings of preliminary, definitive and executive projects of treatment plants and natural appropriate treatment systems.

The student may realize, with teacher assistance during the course, a personal design works regarding a treatment system analysed in lessons or exercise hours.


Assessment methods

Achievements will be assessed by the means of an oral final examination. This is based on an analytical assessment of the "expected learning outcomes" described above.

In order to properly assess such achievement the examination is composed of two questions related to the main parts of the course program. If the student decides to realize a personal design work, the first question will regard this design theme. To obtain a passing grade, students must demonstrate a knowledge of the key concepts of the subject, design ability and an appropriate use of technical language. Higher grades will be awarded to students who demonstrate an organic understanding of the subjects and good design ability.

Failing grade will be awarded if the student shows knowledge gaps in key-concepts of the subject and logic failures in the analysis of the subject or clear design inability.

Each student receives:

1.slides and projected files used during room lessons which are previously given by the teacher

2.examples of technical relations for projects of urban wastewater treatment plants receiver of separated and combined sewer system

3.an harvest of existing technical laws regarding: water resources collection, outfall regulation, treatment and reuse of wastewater.
