Learning outcomes

Students will learn to use essential translation tools (grammars, dictionaries and textual corpora) and methods (analysis of the meaning of the text and its appropriate transposition into the target language); they will learn to apply these to a variety of texts (from Italian into English); they will learn to choose and apply the most appropriate translation strategies for the functional and communicative characteristics of the source text.

Course contents

Students will learn to deal with a variety of text types and to choose the most appropriate strategy, based on standard best professional practice. The discussion in class will be focus on the relevant professional context and include the other skills that translators needs - in addition to the ability to translate - such as reviewing and formatting the texts, and acquiring new specific knowledge.

Readings/Bibliography

Students will use a variety of different texts that will be provided by the teacher. There is no textbook for this course. Any readings will be provided during the lessons.

Teaching methods

The lessons will be held as a "workshop" where a lot of room will be given for discussion. The translation work done in class will be predominantly group work. Attendance is compulsory.

N.B. These methods may change if the COVID emergency makes it impossible to hold lessons in class.

Assessment methods

The course ends with a written examination consisting of 2 texts to be translated: from English to Italian and vice versa. The purpose of the exam will be to verify that the student is able to adopt an appropriate translation strategy for the kind of text. The final mark is an average of the marks for the two modules that compose the course.

N.B. Due the COVID emergency the exams may be held online. Students will be given more details in the period leading up to the exam.

We will make use of mono- and bilingual dictionaries, online resources, and parallel texts.
