Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student has mastery of the methods and techniques of representation, indispensable for exploring the different ways of graphic and visual representation. Through the survey of existing artefacts the student develops the appropriate prefiguring and univocal identification of new forms, preparatory to product design and its image, for dissemination and communication purposes.

Teaching methods

The adopted method for the development of students' skills is based on the combination of lectures / drawing training. Students will be guided in the process of learning the graphic and regulatory codes of the representation and surveying of design products - technical aspect -, and then develop a personal character in the quick sketch aimed at defining the project and rendering - expressive aspect -.

To develop these skills it is necessary that each student always leads to class and to the final exam:

- an A4 format album with rings and a hard cover (strictly white sheets without lines or squares) to redraw what projected and / or drawn on the blackboard and to create the eidotypes of the object chosen for the final exercise.

- a packet of A3 sheets (strictly white sheets without squaring, smooth finish) with descriptive geometry exercises

- A1 format tables describing the chosen object. The possible continuation of the limitations imposed by the COVID-19 may require a change of format to make easier both the creation of technical drawings and their digitization in case of revisions through the Teams platform.

- the object chosen for the final exercise

Assessment methods

The student's degree of learning is assessed on the basis of 3 criteria:

  1. Ability of interpretation and formal and conceptual understanding of the chosen object (function, use, symbolic and expressive status of the object)
  2. Mastery of the technical codes of the representation: correct use of the graphic and normative tools that allow the transmission of the technical contents of the project (measurements, parts, moving elements, view and section elements, etc.).
  3. Ability to represent the apparent features of the object

The presence at the lessons and at the laboratory activity are fundamental to bring to maturation the necessary works for the exam that consist in the representation of a product chosen by the student. The graphic drawings must be carried out on white boards in A1 format and are as follows (or other formats depending on the necessities):


Drawing 1: Description of the object (to be defined and reviewed with the teachers of the photography and modelling module).

Drawing 2: Prospectuses and dimensioned sections of the object as it is (assembled and broken down into its various parts)

Drawing 3: Prospectuses and listed sections of the individual elements that make up the chosen product.

Drawing 4: Exploded axonometric

Drawing 5: Assonometry

Drawing 6: Perspective with material rendering

The drawings, to be carried out both in the classroom and at home, are to be reviewed periodically.
