65931 - CHIMICA GENERALE ED INORGANICA

Academic Year 2020/2021

  • Docente: Elisa Boanini
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: CHIM/03
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Conservation and restoration of cultural heritage (cod. 8616)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has basic knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry. In particular, the student is able to face the study of matter in relation to its composition, structure and reactivity. The student also has knowledge of the fundamentals of inorganic pigment chemistry.

Course contents

Introduction to the study of Chemistry. Properties of matter. Atomic structure. Elements and compounds. The periodic system. Chemical bond. Classification and nomenclature of inorganic compounds. The aqueous solutions. Chemical reactions and stoichiometry. Chemical equilibrium. The pH, acids and bases. Solubility. Introduction to the chemistry of inorganic pigments.

The course also includes four laboratory experiences. Two of them focus on the observation and understanding of chemical reactions. Other two consist of the synthesis of pigments: cadmium yellow and malachite green. In addition to the specific contents, these lab activities are useful to the student in order to acquire some manual skills and to get close to simple chemical laboratory equipment as well as to chemicals safety data sheets.

Readings/Bibliography

The topics can be found in any recent university textbook of General Chemistry. In particular the text by Palmisano, Schiavello "ELEMENTS OF CHEMISTRY", EDISES
Teaching material is provided, available through username and password at VIRTUALE - Online teaching support - University of Bologna.

Teaching methods

The course consists of 6CFU: 5CFU of Lectures and numerical exercises and 1CFU of laboratory experiments.

Numerical exercises and laboratory activity are focused to acquire practical skills.

Assessment methods

The final examination consists in an oral exam, which tests the acquired abilities and knowledge. During the exam, the student can use the Periodic Table of the Elements. The first question of the test is a stoichiometry problem aimed to verify the student's knowledge of the names of inorganic compounds and of the meaning of chemical reaction, which are mandatory requirements to pass the exam. Further questions are addressed to evaluate the student's knowledge of the basic principles of general chemistry and of the chemical properties of elements and compounds.

Teaching tools

Blackboard and video projector. Chemical laboratory activity.
