Learning outcomes

The student will be able to apply basic translation instruments (grammar, dictionaries and textual aspects ) as well as methods (source text analysis and its transposition into the translated text) in the translation of a variety of simple texts from Italian into English. The student will also be able to identify and apply the most appropriate basic translation strategies to fulfill the communicative/operational functions of the source text.

Course contents

The program is based on practical translations from Italian into English.

Students will be shown how to approach six different linguistic registers through a variety of diverse texts each with a corresponding problem or difficulty. Students will be shown distinctive practical translation methods in order to discuss different strategies to be applied to each text or problem. All texts will be analysed from different perspectives: genre, function, content and language/style. Text analysis is also carried out for Source Text Preparation prior to translation, as is Proofreading/Post-editing (three phase) further to translation. Translation homework and teminology research is assigned at the end of every lesson.

Program duration: 40 hours.

All texts to be used during the course will be made available on the Moodle e-learning platform or, when necessary, supplied by the teacher.

Teaching methods

- Analysis of the source text and preparation of the source text for translation.

- Transformation of the source text into an equivalent translated text with respect to the conventions of the target language.

- Analysis and proofreading of target text.

Teaching Modality: Online.

Assessment methods

A written exam consisting in 1 Italian text to be translated into English. The text will be similar to those seen in class.

Method: Online

Length: 300 words.

Time: 90 minutes.

Note:

This course is the second module of the integrated course of Translation 1. The final mark is determined by an average of both active and passive translation module.

All students will receive an informative email with all technical information regarding the online exam procedure once the exam list closes.

Didactic material will be made available on the University's online platform VIRTUALE. Students will be required to download available documents and to regularly check for updates.

All students must have MS TEAMS and ZOOM correctly installed with their Unibo credentials.
