Learning outcomes

The main objective of the course of Pharmacology is to provide basic knowledge on drugs, including therapeutic and toxic effects, with special attention to drugs acting on the central nervous system, inflammation, pain, musculo-skeletal system

Course contents

Concept of drug and medicinal product: regulatory and scientific aspects; therapeutic index and risk-benefit balance of medicinal products; pharmacovigilance. The Summary of Product Characeristics of a Medicinal Product.

Phamacokinetics and pharmacodynamics: routes of drug administration, absorption, distribution, metabolism, escretion; mechanisms of drug action (agonists and antagonists); factors affecting drug response (drug interactions).

Drugs acting on the central nervous system (hypnotics and sedatives)

Drug therapy of inflammation: non steroidal antiiflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) corticosteroids

Drugs for pain control: opioids and paracetamolo

Drugs modulating bose homeostasis: bifosphonates and raloxifene

Drugs for cloot disorders: antiplatelet drugs, heparines, oral anticoagulants

Principles of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy: classification of antibacterial agents

Assessment methods

The final test consists in the discussion of the summary of the product characteristics of a medicinal product selected among those of interest and illustrated during the lectures.

On the basis of clarity and completeness of the discussion, a partial score is assigned. This score will contribute to the final score in proportion to the credits.
