Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has the knowledge and ability to understand the main microorganisms: viruses and bacteria; replication mechanisms; Vaccines; antibiotics and resistance mechanisms.

Course contents

• Bacteria: general characteristics, bacterial reproduction, spore production.Pathogenic action of bacteria. Laboratory diagnosis of bacterial infections.Antibacterial drugs and resistance mechanisms. In vitro sensitivity tests.

• Surveillance of carbapenemase-producing enterobacteria and superbags

• Viruses: general characteristics, Pathogenic action of viruses. Laboratory diagnosis of viral infections. Antiviral drugs.

• Main causative agents of septic arthritis, (N. gonorrhoeae, staphylococci, streptococci, haemophilia, enterobacteriaceae), chronic arthritis (Mycobacterium tubercolosis, Borrelia burgdorferi), reactive arthritis (salmonella, shigelle, chlamydie) and viral arthritis virus , hepatitic and alphavirus viruses).

• Mentions on infectious osteomyelitis.

• Infections of joint prostheses and bacterial biofilms.
