Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing the student with the skills for drawing all the main machine components and understanding technical drawings of industrial products. After a brief introduction the rules and the international standards norms for the conventional representation of each component, for the function it plays into the device or assembly and for the cycle it experiences during its manufacturing, are given.

Course contents

Tools for design and technical drawings. National and International Organizations for norms and standards. Standard lines; inscriptions; basic geometrical constructions; rules of orthogonal projection methods; sections; cavalier and isometric perspective. Standards in technical design; type of drawing: parts, assembly, installation, exploded, for manufacturing. ISO Dimensional and geometrical tolerances; roughness; micro and macro geometrical errors.

Conventional representation of:

Joints; threaded connections; shaft-hub joints; conical elements joints; other joints; articulated joints and guide.  Plain bearings; rolling bearings; bearings assemblies; seal systems. Elastic and rigid joints; transmissions with belts and pulleys; friction wheels, gears;

Teaching methods

Class lectures and technical drawing exercises provided by the Professor and to be done during the lab hours under the Professor's supervision.

Assessment methods

The assessment is performed through a final exercise, that is based on the preparation of a constructive drawing of a mechanical part or component to be derived by the student starting from an assembly drawing. A further section of the exam consists in questions based on the theory. Only students that will have completed the set of lab exercises provided during the course will be allowed to do the exam.

Teaching tools

Projector.

Material for drawing to be brought by the student: A3 and A4 sheets, pencil, eraser, precision compass. Callipers.
