Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows the basic notions of linguistic analysis, in particular in relation to phonology and morphosyntax. It has the basic principles and methods of general phonetics and segmental and prosodic phonology.

Course contents

The course aims at giving the students the basic notions about human language and natural languages. The following topis will be focused: Human language - Natural languages - Linguistic and communicative competence - The linguistic sign - The properties of human language - The acquisition of the native languages - The distinction between phonetics and phonology - The classification of vowel and consonants - The notion of word and morpheme

For each of these issues the potential applications in the field of speech therapy will be highlighted.

Assessment methods

The exam is a written test consisting of some multiple choice questions and on 2 open questions. The answers to the open questions require the ability to combine synthesis and clarity of exposure.

Scores in the written test are assigned according to the following criteria:
(i) multiple choice questions assign 0, 1 or 2 points: 2 points if the answer is correct; 1 point if the answer is incomplete, but tends to be exact; 0 points if the answer is wrong; multiple choice questions are both content-based and linguistic data analysis exercises;
(ii) each of the open questions is evaluated from 0 to 3, according to:
a) the relevance of the answer to the question
b) the capacity for synthesis
c) the propriety of language and technical vocabulary
