Basic Nursing Skills course for Medical students at UNIBO Medical School

This highly interactive course will teach you how to safely perform basic nursing skills before starting the clinical clerkships in the hospital wards.

The course consists of practical hands-on simulation in the Clinical Simulation Center.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

After attending the course, the medical student should be able to:

COMPETENCY GOALS - SKILLS OBJECTIVE

Pressure ulcers (PUs) assessment and dressing

Knowledge of:

• PUs staging

• PUs treatment: i) wound bed preparation (wound irrigation and, when necessary, chemical or surgical debridement), ii) key attributes of a PU dressing, iii) types of dressings: basic wound dressings, advanced wound dressings, anti-microbial dressings and specialist dressings

• collection of a specimen for culture and sensitivity (C&S) of a wound

Perform a PU dressing while maintaining patient’s safety and comfort.

Correctly perform a Peripheral Venous Catheter (PVC) insertion and removal

Identification of an appropriate intravenous (IV) site

Identification of the appropriate size of the cannula

Maintain aseptic technique

Perform skin cleansing

Apply sterile dressing

Correctly perform Central Venous Access Devices (CVADs) dressing

Assess CVAD insertion site (for inflammation, redness, etc.) through old dressing

Remove old dressing

Maintain aseptic technique

Perform skin cleansing

Reapply sterile dressing

Correctly perform a venipuncture procedure

Correctly perform a sterile collection of blood samples for aerobic and anaerobic culture

Knowledge of the equipment needed for the procedure

Maintain aseptic technique

Demonstrate the proper technique to perform a venipuncture and a sterile collection of blood samples for aerobic and anaerobic culture.

Correctly insert an urinary catheter

Knowledge of the equipment needed for the procedure

Maintain aseptic technique

Demonstrate the proper technique to insert an urinary catheter in a female and in a male.
