Learning outcomes

The module aims to provide students with the methodological knowledge and technical skills useful for digital modeling and virtual representation of a product characterized also by complex surfaces or procedurally generated forms.

At the end of the course the students are:

- addressed, through the use of software for the modeling of simple and complex surfaces and photorealistic rendering, to explore the potential offered by these tools for the development of the product and its documentation / communication;

- prepared to face the issues related to the production of realistic digital images.

Course contents

Within the general purposes of the Laboratory of Advanced Design 2A CI, the course aims to give students a greater awareness and mastery in the selection and use of some digital tools suitable for modeling, representation and communication of the product.

Specifically, the course will cover the following topics:

- Introduction to the communication of the industrial product through the production of static images and / or digital video

- Introduction to advanced digital rendering techniques and digital imaging

- Techniques and methods for using off-line digital rendering systems and real-time rendering

- Introduction to digital video production techniques

- Techniques for editing sequences, inserting sound and textual comments, production of animation effects, track / sound and video synchronization.

Teaching methods

The course is organized in cycles of theoretical lectures, a series of practical exercises / individual work in the laboratory of the concepts acquired with the prefixed objects, aimed at developing a digital presentation of a product.

The course includes a series of individual and / or group activities of a triple nature

1_ Case study: the communication of the industrial product through video spot
Short exercise (individual work): students must independently carry out a study on a case study concerning the methods and techniques of product communication through the production of video from digital models.

This activity aims to develop in the student the analytical and critical skills of the strategies adopted for the communication of the industrial product.

The student will have to produce a paper in digital format (PPT or PDF) concerning a case study of their choice, starting from a common theme assigned.

2_ Digital model rendering / editing and editing of digital video
Individual work in the laboratory: practical activities for the acquisition of knowledge and techniques related to the production of digital rendering images and the production, and editing of digital video.

3_ Production and editing of a digital video
Long-term practice (group work): group students must independently produce a video or multimedia product related to the product developed within the Industrial Design Course 4.

This activity aims to develop students' communication skills through the production of a video or multimedia product and in the appropriate use of digital imaging techniques from 3D models and in the use of video production techniques. or multimedia product.

Each group must produce a work in digital format (MP4 or other format) concerning the product developed in the Industrial Design Course 4.

Assessment methods

In order to be admitted to the exam each student have to produce the following documents:

a - Analysis of the case study (see short tutorial);

b - Video or other multimedia product related to the concept developed within the Industrial Design Course 4, as an integral part of the Laboratory.

In the absence of both works (a and b) the student can not take the proof of profit

To take the exam, registration is required through Almaesami, in compliance with the deadlines provided for.

The verification of learning takes place through the only final exam, which ascertains the acquisition of all the knowledge and all the expected skills through the presentation and discussion in the classroom of the two papers (a and b).

The assessment is graded according to the ability of the student to know how to expose and put into practice the expected knowledge. The complete lack of a competence will result in not passing the exam.

Evaluation criteria and relative weights for the final evaluation:

- Level of analytical and critical analysis applied in the elaborate 'aì, related to the strategies adopted for the communication of the industrial product (25% of the overall evaluation);

- Overall communicative effectiveness of the processed 'b' (35% of the overall evaluation);

- Quality and technical characteristics of the synthesis images and / or animations used for the production of the video / multimedia product (20% of the overall evaluation);

- Quality and technical characteristics of the digital video produced (20% of the overall evaluation);

The achievement by the student of an organic vision of the topics dealt with in a joint lesson with their critical use, the demonstration of possession of a mastery in the use of technologies for the production of digital products and the use of an appropriate and specific language will be evaluated with marks of excellence.

The mostly mechanical application of the methodologies and technologies presented in class, the ability to analyze and not articulate criticism, using a correct language, but not always appropriate, will lead to discrete evaluations.

Technical skills related to the production of limited digital products, limited analytical and critical skills, use of inappropriate language - albeit in a context of minimal knowledge of exam topics - will lead to votes that will not exceed sufficiency.

Gaps in technical skills related to the production of digital products, gaps in analytical and critical abilities, inappropriate language will lead to a negative evaluation.
