Learning outcomes

This course is designed to provide students with a solid basis of accounting. At the end of the course stdents are able (a) to understand the difference between accrual accounting and cash flows; (b) to understand the nature of the information on the income statement, the balance sheet, and the statement of cash flows; (c) to know the meaning of some of the more frequently used terms on a set of financial statements, such as depreciation, prepaid expenses, and allowances for doubtful accounts.

Course contents

The course is divided into two parts:

Part 1. PRINCIPLES OF ACCOUNTING
(45 hours), Professor Federica Farneti

The aim of the course is mainley to provide knowledge on financial accounting. Students also learn to manage the bookkeeping process, financial statement analysis and Social and Environmental Accounting. Students are able to make fundamental interpretations of a company's financial position and results of operations.

At the end of the course students will be able to understand financial statements and the fact that these are the product of the financial accounting process. They represent the means of communicating economic information about the organization to stakeholders who want to make decisions and inform judgments about the entity's financial position. Also, students will be able to understand some fundamental financial statement analysis concepts and tools.

Furthermore, students will develop knowledge on non-financial information. To integrate the skills and knowledge on sustainable reporting, students examine and use the guidelines for sustainability reporting and its measures for guiding organizations to a more sustainable future, understanding their economic, environmental and social impacts (as well as related consequences). Further the Directive 95/2014 will be presented on non-financial disclosure.

Unit 1-3) Introduction, syllabus, schedule and exam. What is accounting and what is financial accounting.

Unit 4-8) Financial statements and accounting concepts and principles.

Unit 9-10) Fundamental interpretations made from financial statements data.

Unit 11) Extended performance reporting such as sustainability reporting. Additional material will be provided.

Unit 12-15) The bookkeeping process and transaction analysis.

Part 2. ACCOUNTING WITH LEGO
(15 hours), Professor Satoshi Sugahara (Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan)

You will use the most popular colorful plastic blocks toy to approach accounting. Beginners and who has already approached accounting in high school will enjoy these innovative classes were individual and team creativity meets accounting basics.

The detailed program will be distributed during the first class.

Grading will be based on a combination of course contribution,
group presentation, paper works in the course and a final report (see detailed syllabus).

Assessment methods

Part 1. A final examination will be held at the end of each term and will consist of essay questions, multiple choices questions related to different elements of the course programme, as well as exercises.
