Learning outcomes

The workshop aims at analyse the main demographic dynamics in the various areas of the world. The aim is to develop an understanding of the evolutionary mechanisms of populations and the relationships between individual demographic behaviour and contextual factors. Particular attention is devoted to the quantitative analysis of the international migration. At the end of the lab, the students will be able to find the appropriate sources and to manage the information for the analysis of the population dynamics.

Course contents

The activities foresee an active participation of the students paying particular attention to the interaction between students and the teacher. The activities are structured in two parts. The first consists in the presentation and discussion of recent publications on demographic issues, the second in the preparation and presentation of in-depth materials.

Course contents:

Presentation of activities and working method. The main demographic dynamics at global level. The sources in demographic research. The aging population and the fertility decline in Italy and Europe- The delay in the transition to adulthood. International migrations, History. policies and demographic characteristics in te movement of people within the European Union. The future of the world population and the unsolved problems.

Teaching methods

Students will be actively engaged in collective discussion and group activities that will be presented and analysed together. The teaching materials will be available to students in digital format and can be downloaded by connecting through UniBo credentials.

Assessment methods

The criteria for the acquisition of credits are:

1) public discussions on the topics listed in the program;

2) the preparation and presentation of a research activity;

3) attendance at least 2/3 of the meetings

Teaching tools

The guided use of websites can be particularly useful in finding documentation and data on specific topics. Educational materials will be available to students in digital format and can be downloaded on the dedicated E-learning website.
