Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing students with the basis of the XIXth and XXth century Political History in European and non-European countries, with particular reference to the political-institutional systems.
At the end of the course students
- will know the most relevant aspects of Contemporary History;
- will be able to deal with the main issues and the fundamental cruxes of the contemporary historical evolution;
- will be able to analyze the most important historical events of the Present Age both diachronically and synchronically.

Course contents

As far as the academic year 2018-2019 is concerned the Contemporary History Course aims at giving students a basic frame of political history in 19th and 20th century European and extra- European countries. A special attention will be paid to political-institutional systems. The chronology of the course ranges from the Wien Congress to the 70ies of the twentieth century. Classes provide a compared analysis of the main historical events which concerned Italy, France, Great Britain, Spain and Russia in addition to the most relevant extra-European facts.

Students are suggested to study the institutional part while integrating it with other textbooks.

For instance, in focusing their attention on the period of time between the two Russian Revolutions, students may start from the Manuale (chapter 10, par. 7 and 8, and chapter 14), may investigate the theme in chapter XIII of Introduzione alla storia contemporanea , identify the topics related to the theme in chapter XIII of Introduzione alla storia contemporanea , identify the topics related to the theme, eg the Bolshevik party model (see centralism, centrism and Communism), and consider reference classics like Lenin's Che fare?, the institutional structure of post-1905 Russia ( in Parole e materiali per la storia contemporanea ).

Non-attending students (International Relations Degree) will take an exam based on an open answer questionnaire of 15 items and an oral test on one monograph chosen by the student.

Assessment methods

For non-attending students:

  1. an open answer questionnaire of 15 items;
  2. an oral test based on the monograph chosen by the student.

Students are reminded to carry their undergraduate's record book on the day of the exam as well as the two monographs they have chosen.

The written test lasts 25 minutes.

To pass the exam, the student must have a pass mark both the written and the oral tests
