Learning outcomes

The purpose of the course is to provide a solid understanding of the theory, research and practice in sport psychology


Course contents

The main issue of the course is to show the cognitive and communicative/interpersonal processes in athletes and their influence on sport and performance.

The course is divided into two modules: I: Prof. Garotti 15 hours; II Prof. Ricci 30 hours.

I module: will be proposed theoretical models of sports psychology;   application of theories and techniques to improve the athlete's performance (Self determination theory, flow, perception and attention).

II module: Self efficacy, imagery, arousal, quality of the coach-athlete relationship, group cohesion, conflict, and  leadership. Application of theories and techniques to improve the athlete's performance. The techniques used in sports psychology will be presented to students.

The course will take place during the first semester (from the end of  September to December 2019) at the Department of Psychology  (address: Viale Berti Pichat 5, Bologna).

Individual and small group practical exercises will be held during the lessons.

Teaching methods

Traditional lecture and small group discussion will be conducted by the professors. Students are expected to take an active role in discussion.


Assessment methods

The Assessment will be done through oral examination (for each module) in order to verify the achievement of the course objectives related to the understanding of theoretical models and techniques of sports psychology and their application in the preparation of the athlete.

The final score of the exam will be equal to the average of the marks given by the teachers.


Teaching tools

PowerPoint presentation. Active participation of students will be solicited through readings and discussions on research paper and group work.
