Learning outcomes

the student will learn the pathogenesis of the main neurological diseases, elements of the neurological examination, of diagnostic tools and therapeutic options and the correct approach to different neurological syndromes on the part of the nurse

Course contents

1. Neurological examination: muscle tone, strength, trophies; deep tendon reflexes, coordination, sensation, abnormal movements, disorders of ambulation, dysphagia, diplopia, dizziness and vertigo, facial paresis, afasia, sphincter disturbances, orthostatic hypotension

2.  Laboratory and preclinical exams: EEG, EMG, conduction velocities; lumbar puncture and cerebrospinal fluid exmination

3. Neuromuscular diseases

4. Multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases, including main treatment options

5. Epilepsy and syncope, including main treatment options

6. Parkinson's disease, essential tremor including treatment

7.Movement disorders: chorea, athetosis, including Huntington's disease, vascular chorea and senile chorea

8. Cerebrovascular diseases, treatment options including thrombolysis

9. Dementia: Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, normal pressure hydrocephalus

10. Headache and facial pain

11. Facial palsy, facial hemispasm and myokimia

12. Sleep disorders in hospitalized patients

For each subject etiopathogenesis, clinical catacteristics, diagnostic exams, treatment indications and principles of nursing

Assessment methods

At the end of the course a written test is scheduled (multiple choice questions); being an integrated course the test consists of 90 questions (15 for each course) with a single answer to be chosen between 4 or + different solutions. For each course the student must correctly answer to at least 5 questions from the 15 proposed and the cumulative score must reach 54 correct answers to have the sufficiency (18/30) and according to the total number of correct answers are predefined (and communicated to the students ) also the upper scores; there is no penalty for incorrect answers. The time allowed for the exam is 80 minutes
