Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide the students a preparation that allows them to diagnose various pathologies of the oral and skin mucosa, discussing   the etiology, pathogenesis and clinic features of the major dermatological diseases of dental interest. The students should be able to deal with any dental procedure in relation to dermatological diseases in full autonomy.

 Knowledge and skills to be achieved

At the end of the course, the student should be able to deal with the most common: - dermatological diseases of an inflammatory autoimmune and of infectious origin (viral, bacterial and mycotic) precancerous conditions and malignant skin and mucous neoplasms; - sexually transmitted diseases. The principles of dermatological semeiotics will be also discussed.

Skin and Venous Infectious Diseases and Infectious Diseases Dermatology and Venereal Diseases Introduction to dermatology General principles Anatomy and physiology of the skin, semimucose and oral mucosa Recognize primary, secondary and secondary mucous and skin signs and lesions. How to perform dermatological examination.  A brief desciption of the technical modalities for performing a skin biopsy

Infectious Diseases of Dermatological Interest

 Clinical diagnosis and treatment of infectious dermatitis How to recognize and describe the clinical manifestations of major infections from bacteria, viruses, mycoses

Tips for performing a microscopic preparation for the detection of mycetes and yeasts.

Toxic and allergic dermatitis

Clinical diagnosis and treatment of dermatological diseases on a toxic-allergic basis Recognize the symptoms of urticaria-angioedema syndromes, interpret the pathogenesis, and find out the causes. Recognize or at least suspect skin signs of toxic or allergic infections to drugs and prescribe therapy.

Autoimmune Diseases

Clinical diagnosis and therapy of connective tissue and bumpy dermatitis Recognize the clinical picture and indicate the most common causes of autoimmune bullous diseases (pemphigo, bullous pemphigoid, erpetiform dermatitis) Tips for the preparation of a microscopic preparation for a cytological examination

Inflammatory Dermatitis

Clinical diagnosis and therapy of inflammatory dermatitis Recognize clinical manifestations of lichen planus, perioral dermatitis and cheilitis and dermatological diseases with oral cavity involvement Allergic Dermatitis Clinical diagnosis and therapy of allergic dermatitis Describe the salient features of: irritable contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis; Provide guidelines for the prescriptions and describe how to perform, read and interpret the diagnostic skin tests

Oral mucosal cancer

Clinical, diagnosis and therapy

Classify, recognize, features of benign and precancerous tumors. Classify and define oral melanoma. Describe generality, epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, natural history, morphological characteristics , and melanoma staging. The role of  dermatoscopy. Indicate surgical therapeutic approaches for different types of skin cancers

Assessment methods

The aim of the exam is to evaluate the achievement of the didactic objectives:

The basic knowledge of  the diagnostic-clinical approach to the most common dermatological diseases; instrumental findings and laboratory examinations. Test the ability to approach a therapeatic process for the latter diseases.
