Learning outcomes

The student will be informed about the most important technologies for the manufacturing of industrial products, along with the principar relationship between process parameters, product properties and process sustainability.

Course contents

The industrial product and the elements concurring to its properties.. Quality of the surfaces, geometric and dimensional precision, tolerance, micro and magrogeometric errors, roughness, shape errors and their measure. Graphic representation of the product. Different types of technical design. Plants, views and sections. Fabrication designs.

Materials.

The most used mterials for product fabrication. Classification. Metals, plastics, ceramics, glasses, natural fibers, composites. Material characterization. Chemical –physical characteristics, mechanical, technological,. Tests for determining material properties. Tensile test, Resilience, Hardness.

Diagrams of state. Solidification dynamics. Pure metals and alloys, Structures of primary solidification and eutectics. Iron-carmod diagram, steels, definition and classification. Principal alloying elements.. Special steels and applications. Changes of microstructure during heat treatments. Normalization, annealing, tempering, relieving, carburizing and nitriding.

Manufacturing processes

Foundry processes: transient and permanent molds, shell molding, lost wax. Die casting, hot and cold chamber, centrifuge casting. Dimensional accuracy of castings. Injection processes for polymeric materials.

Metal forming. Characteristics of deformable materials. Upsetting, rolling, wire drawing, extrusion. Sheet forming: deep drawing, bending, stamping, shearing.

Machining. Linear cutting processes: plasma arc, waterjet, laser. Chip formation mechanics, geometry of tools, cutting mechanics, loads and powers of cutting.. Cutting temperatures. Turning, operations, parameters, machines, tools. Drilling: operations, modes, tools, machines.. Milling: mills, machines, operations.
