Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the students will acquire an exhaustive knowledge of theoretical and methodological foundations of language sciences. The course will provide the students with the basic notions and procedures for linguistic analysis, as well as with the appropriate terminology. At the end of the course, the students will be able to analyze the structure and functions of different types of texts.

Course contents

This course will introduce the scientific foundations for the study of language and languages.

It will describe the features of human language, as a shared faculty of our species, and of natural languages, or the specific instances of language that were implemented in diverse times and places, focusing on the concepts of linguistic variation and language classification.

We will discuss the main theoretical aspects of linguistic studies: phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon and semantics, pragmatics, and their methods.

This course is part of the integrated course Linguistica I; and attending the lectures is compulsory (70% minimum).

Teaching methods

The course is based on classroom lectures.

Assessment methods

The assessment for this course module, Linguistica Generale, will be carried out with a written exam.

The course registration will be done when both examinations, for the modules Lingua Italiana and Linguistica Generale, have been successfully completed; the overall mark will be the average of the two partial marks.

Teaching tools

Classroom slides will be used as teaching support. All materials used during the lessons will be made available for download on the IOL platform.
