Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student: - knows the genesis, development and evolution of the Sociology of Education; - knows the results of the sociological contribution to the study of institutions and educational processes in the sector; - has specific knowledge/sociological skills functional to the assessment of the impact of educational interventions with particular reference to equality and inequality of opportunities in education; - knows how to read and evaluate statistical-sociological data and indicators of school system.

Course contents

The course is divided into two parts:

First part build knowledge on the models of analysis of educational processes and institutions and on the transition from the schoolcentric to polycentric model of training. Starting from the definition of the field of study and research of the Sociology of Education and from the contributions of various authors (Durkheim, Marx, Weber, Parsons, Simmel...), topics such as the relationship between education and society, socialization and theoretical models of reference, social Self and theories of identity, equality of opportunities in education, actors and agencies will be discussed.

Second part deals with some specific issues such as inequalities in education and educational pathways of pupils with non-Italian citizenship

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons, seminar activities and classroom discussions

Assessment methods

The examination will be written with open questions.
Students will be able to bring an essay on a topic discussed during the lessons (in agreement with teacher)

Teaching tools

Synthetic schemes, slides and videos will be used during the lessons.

During the lessons the discussion of the topics will be accompanied by suggestions of texts, documents and empirical research materials that can be used by the students to build individual preparation of the exam under the guidance of the teacher.
