  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Midwifery (cod. 9201)

Learning outcomes

The student should recognize the main characteristics of the distinct goups of microorganisms, the main diagnostic methods for identification of microorganisms, and the pathogenetic mechanisms employed by pathogens. The student should also have specific knowledge on pathogens responsible of infections of the uro-genital tract, and infections transmitted during pregnancy or at birth.

Course contents

Characteristics of microorganisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.

Generalities about transmission routes of infections.

Mechanisms of pathogenesis and host defenses.

Principle of microbiological diagnosis.

Generalities on vaccines. The serological diagnosis.

Transmission of infectious agents through breast milk.

Pathogens that cause infections of the uro-genital tract: E. coli, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, candida, herpes simplex virus, papillomavirus.

Mother-to-child-transmission: pathogens that can be transmitted during pregnancy or perinatal period or postnatal period, including 1) bacteria(Treponema pallidum, Streptococcus agalactiae), 2) viruses (rubella virus, parvovirus B19, cytomegalovirus, HIV, hepatitis viruses), and 3) protozoa(Toxoplasma gondii).
