69077 - Chemistry Laboratory (A-L)

Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Materials Chemistry (cod. 8006)

Learning outcomes

The students acquire the basic knowledge of laboratory tools and techniques. In particular they learn how to safely handle chemical substances, use IUPAC nomenclature and IS units, perform stoichiometric calculations and prepare solutions, collect and process experimental data with theory.

Course contents

Safety in chemistry laboratories. Basic laboratory equipment and techniques. Synthesis of inorganic compounds. Equilibrium. Acid-base and redox titrations. Basic elements of stoichiometry.

Readings/Bibliography

Lecture notes and handbook will be handed by the teacher and will be available on line.

The topics of this course can be found in any university textbook of General Chemistry. See, for example: Steven S. Zumdhal, "Chimica", Zanichelli editore.

Teaching methods

The lectures will cover the general problems related to laboratory activity: safety, Language, design and data processing. The course also includes: stoichiometric problems solving; preliminary introduction and demonstration of laboratory exercises; practical laboratory exercises aimed at developing basic skills required to carry out laboratory activities.

Assessment methods

Oral examination.

Teaching tools

Blackboard, personal computer, videoprojector.
