Learning outcomes

The main objective of this course of Pharmacology is to provide basic knowledge on the following items:

  • concept of drug and medicinal product: regulatory and scientific aspects; therapeutic index and risk-benefit balance of medicinal products;
  • phamacokinetics and pharmacodynamics: routes of  drug administration and mechanisms of drug action;
  • classes of drugs of interest in podiatry, namely products for topical use.
  • drugs used in emergencies and agents used in anaesthesia

Course contents

There are four main topics:

  • concept of drug and medicinal product: regulatory and scientific aspects (therapeutic index and risk-benefit balance of medicinal products);
  • basic concepts of phamacokinetics and pharmacodynamics with practical examples, guiding students towards understanding of the importance of route of administration for optimal drug action;
  • classes of drugs of interest in podiatry (with practical examples and critical reading of official summaries of the product characteristics approved by regulatory agencies), namely products for topical use.
  • drugs used in emergencies and anaesthesia (with practical examples and critical reading of official summaries of the product characteristics approved by regulatory agencies).

Readings/Bibliography

It is essential to access the online material provided by the teacher (access restricted to UNIBO students). There is no need for specific textbooks.

Assessment methods

The final test consists in the discussion of the summary of the product characteristics of a medicinal products selected among those of interest in podiatry and illustrated during the lectures. On the basis of clarity and completeness of the discussion, a partial score is assigned. This score will contribute to the final score in proportion to the credits (1/4).
