Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Docente: Grazia Antonella Tura
  • Credits: 2
  • SSD: MED/45
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Rimini
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Nursing (cod. 8475)

Learning outcomes

The student at the end of the course will be able to:

  • Indicate the main healthcare associated infection  (HAI)
  • Identify and discuss the etiology, mode of transmission, risk factors implicated in the transmission of HAI and nursing interventions to control endemic and epidemic spread
  • Indicate areas/departments at increased risk of  HAI
    Distinguish which are the most representative HAI,  in hospitals and territorial settings
    Identify, for each infection, prevention measures strongly recommended and the specific BUNDLES:  infection of intravascular devices, surgical infections, urinary tract infections, ventilator associated infection and respiratory care.
  • Implement the hand hygiene and provide support during the process of the correct application of the isolation precautions (standard, contact, droplet, airborne)
  • Manage a patient colonized or infected with a MDRo and/or shin infection in each setting of care
  • to know and use the tools for the risk assessment and the nursing assessment
  • to know and use the nursing  diagnoses  NANDA International  NIC NOC (with particular regard to  risk of infection and impairment of skin integrity)

Course contents

1) Epidemiology of HAI with regard to infection of the skin and soft tissue ; diagnostic criteria according to the ECDC, in hospitals and residential facilities;
2) Standard isolation precautions and contact precautions (intact skin, broken skin) syndromic isolation

3) Hygiene skin's healthcare workers with particular emphasis on hand hygiene

4 ) The bundles to prevent the HAI; (surgical site infection, intravascular device associated infection, ventilator acquired pneumonia (VAP), urinary tract infection  catheter related)
5) Patients colonized/infected by microorganisms multi-drug resistant (MDRo): CRE, MRSA, ESBL, Acinetobacter, Clostridium difficile; measures to prevent the transmission of MDRo and nursing management

6 ) Role and precautions in the use of detergents and antiseptics for skin, undamaged and damaged (infant/child, adult);

7 ) Aspects of nursing: skin's hygiene of the patient hospitalized / institutionalized:  measures to protect and maintain the integrity; pre-operative preparation, intra-operative preparation to reduce the infection's risk;  performing diagnostic tests (eg, blood culture) using aseptic technique;

8) The risk assessment scales;  skin, wounds, and soft tissues (braden, asepsis wound, push tool, etc.).
9) The NANDA-I diagnoses, NIC, NOC, (NNN) related to the compromised skin integrity;
10) Special conditions of skin infections, and parasitic diseases: scabies, pediculosis, varicella zooster, aspergillosis; mode of transmission, prevention and control measures.
