39312 - Clinical Pathology Tecniques 2

Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Biomedical Laboratory techniques (cod. 8484)

Learning outcomes

At the end the student will have the fundamentals for performing and critical evaluation of the main diagnostic laboratory techniques in renal and cardiovascular pathology.

Course contents

The laboratory in nephrovascular disease.
Glomerulonephritis. Handling and preparation of renal biopsy specimens. Stains required for histological examination of renal biopsy. Histological elemental lesions. Routine antibody panel for immunofluorescence microscopy. Main immunofluorescence patterns. Ultrastructural elemental lesions.
The laboratory in cardiovascular disease. Factors involved in the atherogenesis process: lifestyle, hypercholesterolemies, hyperglycaemia. Vulnerability markers. Markers of ischemia and myocardial infarction (albumin modified by ischemia and troponin). Heart failure markers (natriuretic peptides).
The lab of the vasculitis.

Readings/Bibliography

  • Silva's diagnostic renal pathology. Cambridge University Press. II edizione. 2017.
  • The ESC Textbook of Vascular Biology. Krams R, Bäck M eds,
    Cambridge University Press. 2017.

Teaching methods

The course consists of 2 CFU (frontal teaching). Seminars held by experts in molecular techniques will be scheduled.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists of the oral presentation of two questions on the program's topics.
For each question, the student receives a vote based on the demonstrated ability to briefly expose the issues with some critical thinking. The weighted result, expressed in 30/30, contributes in proportion to the number of credits, the final vote of the entire integrated course.

Teaching tools

The teaching material presented in class will be made available on amsacta.unibo.it in electronic format.
