Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has expertise relating to: fundamental principles of the etiology and pathogenesis, cellular and tissue changes leading to reversible and irreversible damage, the molecular and cellular bases of acute, chronic and repair inflammatory response, the specific mechanisms of the adaptive immunity, its defensive aspects and possible pathological consequences; the etiopathogenesis of neoplastic transformation, progression to malignancy and metastasis.

INTRODUCTION AND FUNDAMENTAL CELLULAR PATHOLOGY

  • Objectives, purpose and organization of the course.
  • Etiology and pathogenesis, classification of etiologic factors.
  • Cell injury : subletal alterations, apoptosis and necrosis.
  • Cell ageing
  • Cell adaptation : atrophy, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, metaplasia, dysplasia.

DEFENSE MECHANISMS

  • Innate immunity
  • Adaptive immunity
  • Acute and chronic inflammation
  • Systemic responses and fever.
  • Repair, regeneration and healing
  • Immunopathology
  • Transplants
  • Vaccines


TUMOR BIOLOGY

  • Benign and malignant tumors, nomenclature.
  • Cancer epidemiology.
  • Cancer genes: oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes.
  • Inherited tumors.
  • Cancer progression and malignant phenotype.
  • Metastatic process.
  • Immune response and cancer antigens.
  • Chemical, physisical and infectious carcinogenic agents.
