27675 - Genetic Anthropology

Academic Year 2011/2012

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Health Biology (cod. 8023)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has the basic knowledge on molecular anthropology and human genome diversity. In particular, the student is able to analyze  the most important genetic polymorphisms used in the forensic field, to understand the differences  between  uniparental and autosomal markers and to select the more appropriate  statistical  analyses of the genetic data.

Course contents

  • Molecular Anthropology and Forensic Genetics, two different but complementary disciplines
  • Genetic polymorphisms: classical and molecular markers
  • Molecular techniques for anthropological  and forensic genetics
  • Lineage markers (Y chromosome and mt DNA): use in forensic and  population genetics
  • Ancestry informative markers (AIMs) and phenotypic traits (skin color, eyes .....)
  • Statistical analysis and Databases used in Molecular Anthropology and Forensic Genetics
