Plant biochemistry

The biotechnological potential of peptides derived from plant ureases, a class of nickel-dependent enzymes, is the focus of this collaboration.

Scientific collaboration  between Prof. Stefano Luciano Ciurli, Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology of the University of Bologna and Professor Celia Ribeiro da Silva Carlini, Laboratorio de Proteina Toxica, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre (BR):

  • the structure of peptides derived from plant ureases
  • the relationship between the sequence, structure, and activity of natural and synthetic peptides with potential use as natural and biodegradable pesticides.

PhD Student  Fernanda Lopes, from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, is visiting the Department (April-October 2013) in cojunction with the prof. Carlini's scientific collaboration Her research is devoted to the determination of the tridimensional structure of Jaburetox: a peptide derived from Jack Bean Urease (Canavalia ensiformis), using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.
