Mechanics of innovative materials

Testing and simulation of innovative materials is of extreme importance for the Italian and Brazilian industries especially in the aeronautic and petroleum fields.

The long lasting collaboration on this topic with the Universidade  Federal do Rio Grande and with Universidade Federal Fluminense started  for the complementarity of the research groups.

In fact in Bologna the experimental activities were more developed while the tradition started by prof. Costa Mattos at the PUC in Rio, then transferred to Furg with prof Chimisso, and to UFF with the same Costa Mattos, was focused on the material parameters identification and simulation.

Both groups took advantage of the collaboration and now a Material Testing Laboratory for Petroleum Platforms mooring ropes (PolyCab) is active, while several simulation activities are ongoing in Bologna.

Exchange visits

  • 1998 Prof. Fulvio Chimisso of Fundação Universidade do Rio Grande makes his Post Doc in Bologna analyzing low cycle fatigue data.
  • 1999  Ing. Giangiacomo Minak spends one month at the FURG in Rio Grande do Sul, gave advice for the establishing of a new laboratory and had lessons on solution of non linear problems by Finite Element Method (funded by MAE)
  • 2000 Ing. Fabrizia Ghezzo prepares her Ms. Thesis in FURG in Rio Grande do Sul, on simulation of low cycle fatigue behavior of metal then moves to UFF in Niteroi (Funded by the Bologna Engineering Faculty)
  • 2004 Ing. Giangiacomo Minak spends three month in UFF in Niteroi studying the low cycle fatigue behavior of metal matrix composites  (Marco Polo Project)
  • 2007-2010 the Ms. Students Alessandro Soldà, Fabio di Gioacchino and Roberto Palazzetti prepare their thesis in UFF in Niteroi with Prof. Heraldo Costa Mattos (Funded by the Bologna Engineering Faculty)
  • 2011 Visit to UFF and UFRJ of Ing. Giangiacomo Minak, Riccardo Panciroli, Crisitano Fragassa, Ana Pavlovic in the framework of the project Alma@Service
  • Being part of the Scientific Committee of the Youth Symposium on Experimental Methods in Solid Mechanics, promoted by the University of Bologna, Prof. Chimisso visits the DIEM department yearly
