This project aims at studying a very challenging and relevant topic, both from a biomedical and a social perspective, namely characterizing the process of ageing in humans and the implications on age-related diseases.
It combines sophisticated approaches coming from Bioinformatics, Biophysics and Network Theory (comprised under the Systems Biology) to elaborate high-throughput omics data (i.e. gene expression, metabolic and proteomic data) with a multi-level and holistic perspective.
Moreover, it will take advantage of a detailed anthropological characterization and stratification of the samples, coming from different groups differing by social and ethnic issues both in Italy and Brazil, that will allow to produce a clear experimental design and to take into account the different genetic and environmental factors affecting the phenotype of the studied cases.
The project allows to integrate data on a very recently emerging theme (ageing) that already affects European and North American countries, but is due to spread very quickly in all industrialized (emerging) countries. And also to compare and improve different approaches used by the research teams from both countries.
