Smart cities are cities that, through intelligent integration of digital networks and new communication technologies, are enabled to guarantee an efficient distribution, circulation and creation of knowledge among all its citizens.
Brazil has already begun pilot projects in Porto Alegre, Curitiba and Paranà, aiming to find efficient ways to manage challenges like the rapid increase of urban population and the metropolitan complexity of larger cities like Sao Paolo.
The project's focus is now on new technologies employed to increment and develop sociocultural capital and improve citizen life quality. Smart Cities will enhance integration of diverse cultural and social realities, conservation and exploitation of their material and immaterial heritages through new strategies for the creation and circulation of knowledge capital in transformative, engaging ways.
The project is fundamentally interdisciplinary, involving
architects, town planners, communication experts and other specialist fields. Many different competences are
necessary to assure the efficient development, circulation and sedimentation of relevant knowledge in this new area of
studies.
