ALMA@SERVICE
UniboTeam Leader: Giangiacomo Minak, DIEM Alma Mater Studiorum -Università di Bologna
The aim of the project ALMA@SERVICE is to evaluate the capabilities related to the substitution of the metallic materials used in the construction of freight railway vagons with advanced materials like Glass fiber reinforce plastics.
The main aspect of the research is to evaluate the durability of the material subject to a combination of vibrations, fatigue loading, impacts, humidity and rain, UV radiation, heat and ice. Transferring technologies already uses in similar market sectors, new models of wagons could be developed with reduced weight and less noisy (innovation phase). The mechanical behavior of this class of materials is investigated, and damage models are developed in order to support the industrialization phase (applied research phase). The acquired know-how is then transferred to the partners to develop new GFRP wagons in a systematic and reliable way (technology transfer phase).
