is born in Cesena the 12th march of 1946
Academic Titles
Degree in Geology: 1970 Unibo (110 /110 cum laude)
Grant M.P.I. 1971-1978
Assistant of Geology: 1978-1983

(current) Full professor of stratigraphy and sedimentology:
2001-2008
Professor of: Geological Survey (Earth Sciences,

Scientific activity
His main
research topics range from litho-biostratigraphic studies, to
facies analysis, lithostratigraphy-sequence stratigraphy and
palaeogeography, applied geology.
In particular:
-Anisian stratigraphy and palaeogeography from Switzerland to
the Slovenian border;
-stratigraphy and palaeogeography of Middle Permian-Early
Triassic;
-origin of volcanic events in the middle
Triassic;
-location and genesis of Pb-Zn deposits within the Middle
Permian-Middle Triassic successions;
- the possible causes of the biotic crisis at the
Permian-Triassic boundary;
- the possible causes of the biotic crisis at the
Frasnian-Famennian boundary.
- modelling of depositional basins
- forecasting shallow landsliding
He has also studied Miocene-Olocene stratigraphy for compilation
of geological maps (scales: 1:10.000 and 1:50.000) of the North
Apennines, and has investigated the Lower-Upper Pleistocene
continental sequences of the Apennines, including analyses of
various kind of data: palaeomagnetic, pollen, isotopes and
Palaeolithic archaeology. The resulting stratigraphic framework has
been used to reconstruct the depositional sequences of the Po Plain
(provinces of Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena and Rimini) and estimation of
middle-long term subsidence rates. He has undertaken simulations of
the Holocene Adriatic/Padan sedimentary prism using numerical
physically-based models (“Clastic” and “Basin”) constrained with
borehole data, archaeological dates and historical data on
coastline migration, applying the current Holocene sea-level
fluctuation curve.
He has participated in international conferences and workshops
on these research topics, and has visited China,
Pakistan, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Bosnia,
Montenegro, Spain, Greece, Australia, USA California, USA Maine,
Hawaii, Barbados.
He published more than 140 scientific papers.
He popularized some geological theme on books, newspapers,
Radio and TV broadcasts and on Web (www.geotools. info).
